Porta Romana’s “Design a Light” Award – Runner-up Prize
The brief was to design a lamp that would be suitable for the Porta Romana range. ‘Caryatid’ was inspired by Greek statues and the work of contemporary Catalan sculptor, Xavier Corbero. The lamp appears to be an abstract block but from different angles evokes a kneeling woman with arms raised in prayer. At the back of the statue, the soles of her shoes, a discreet clue. The form was developed through modelling clay. When I was happy with the shape, I based technical drawings on the model, scaling it up to table lamp size – an imposing and impressive bulk.
